Hi, it's me. Your weary Montessori pal that has been sporadic in your inbox. I'm back today to share another miracle (I mean, classroom observation. But I'm starting to think they're the same thing…). On Friday, a child brought in her pet chicken that spent the day in the classroom. All day, the children were filled with joy and curiosity as they observed the chicken in her habitat. At one point in the morning, there were five or six children around the chicken habitat, their eyes wide with wonder. I suggested that someone draw a picture of the chicken while they observe. I like to put suggestions out there and see who bites. Things rarely go as expected when I do this, but it often leads to delightful outcomes. Anyway, I thought this suggestion could inspire more meaningful activity from a specific group of kindergarten girls, who had spent most of their morning gossiping around the chicken pin. None of them seemed interested in drawing, but all three of them did move along and eventually found something purposeful to do (who wants to gossip when the teacher is RIGHT THERE). I sat down on my stool to take notes on what activities these girls made their way to. I had almost forgotten about my suggestion to draw the chicken. Suddenly, two children appeared with paper attached to clipboards. They sat down and began drawing.
